Cutters Win Streak at Four

September 3 - The Williamsport Crosscutters beat Mahoning Valley 14-4 Monday afternoon on their way to a season-high fourth straight victory

The Cutters tallied their season best 14 runs on 19 hits, yet another 2007 best, while backing Drew Naylor for his eighth win.  Dominic Brown lead off the game with a triple and scored on a single by Derrick Mitchell, who later came home on a ground out by Michael Taylor.  Tyler Mach doubled in the inning as well, and scored on a single by Tim Kennelly.

Staked to an early three run lead, Drew Naylor went to work.  He struck out the side in the first, and two of the three he faced in the second.  Naylor pitched six innings and struck out 11, the third time this year he has retired 11 batters by strikeout.

The Crosscutters added one run in the fourth, three in the fifth, and another in the sixth to build a comfortable 8-3 lead.  Mahoning Valley's first three runs came on a home runs by Adam White off Naylor in the fifth inning, the lone blemish on the Autrailian's day.  Williamsport's offense was not done, however as the Cutters tagged two Scrappers pitchers for six runs on seven hits and one error in the top of the eighth, including three on Matt Spencer's ninth home run of the season.  Rick Austin pitched the final three innings for Williamsport earning his third save.

Mach finished 3-for-3 with two runs driven in and three runs scored while Mitchell had three hits in four at bats with two runs batted in and three runs scored.  With the 11 strkeouts, Naylor extended his own Crosscutters record to 97 K's, and moved into sole possession of third place all-time in Williamsport short-season history behind Steve Foran (138 in 1971) and Mike McFarland (101 in 1968).

The Crosscutters play their final road game of the 2007 campaign Tuesday evening against the Scrappers at 7:05 p.m.
