Slingerland Named NY-P Sports Turf Manager of the Year
September 24 - The New York-Penn League has
announced that Melissa Slingerland has been named the 2007 NY-P League
Sports Turf Manager of the Year.
Slingerland has served as
the Head Groundskeeper at Bowman Field in 2002-2003 and from 2005-2007.
She began her career on the Bowman Field crew in 1999. In 2004,
Slingerland was the Head Groundskeeper for the Single-A Charlestown
RiverDogs.
“I’m honored to have been chosen”, Slingerland
stated. “As one of the few females in the business it’s great to know
there is respect for the job that my crew and I do on a daily basis.”
Cutters manager Greg Legg praised Slingerland’s work, saying, “She showed
me early on that she knew what she was talking about and knew what she was
doing when it came to this field. It’s obvious that she has an
outstanding work ethic and keeps our playing surface in top shape at all
time.”
Slingerland, who graduated from the Pennsylvania
College of Technology in 2003,
is joined on the Williamsport groundskeeping staff by Asst. Groundskeeper
Brian McLaughlin and Stadium Operations Intern Kevin Rupert.
Williamsport General Manager Doug Estes praised
Slingerland’s work stating, “Missy has been a tireless worker for the
Williamsport Crosscutters for many years. She has continually proven to
be a tremendous asset to our organization, and certainly is more than
deserving of this honor. We are extremely fortunate to have such a
dedicated worker, but more importantly such a tremendous individual on our
staff.”
Slingerland, and other Sports Turf award winners from
each league will be honored at The Baseball Winter Meetings to be held in
Nashville in December, where the “Sports Turf Manager of the Year” will be
announced. The awards are sponsored by the Sports Turf Managers
Association.
